From the Visitors Book...

Wonderful location with a view you can look at for hours, but what we will really remember is the home away from home feel you have created here. One of the best hotels we've stayed in! Plus, we got to stay in a town that celebrates Guy Fawkes Night better than we do at home.
Vicky & Pete Cook – London (11/11)

“Magical Masters” We now join an illustrious group – guests at The Masters Lodge. You've made us feel incredibly special on our third wedding anniversary. If we had one night to spend anywhere, we'd spend it here, hopefully sharing a few cocktails with you. Thank you for everything.
Elle & Tim Gibson – Singapore & UK (11/11)

We loved our stay with you and consider it one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand. Thanks again for your gracious hospitality. We were amazed with your attention to detail and with the clearly loving nature with which you have built your establishment.
Amy & David Levere – New York City (11/11)

Our profound thanks for 3 wonderful days in lovely home with its history and its exquisite deco style and detail! And for the unique breakfasts, extraordinary hors d'oeuvres, and drinks made by an obvious expert. And the flowers arranged also with the touch of an artist. Together these made for a memorable stay provided by gracious hosts. We are grateful to you both.
Beverley & Stan Johnson – Bethesda, Maryland (10/11)

You have obviously travelled the world to have become such wonderful and accomplished hosts. The art, the food, the music, the ambiance, the flowers, and your beautiful welcoming home, a thousand thanks to you for giving us such a memorable experience. “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breaths away” Hilary Cooper
Di & John West – Australia & Hawaii (05/11)

What a special place you have! The Masters Lodge is a beautiful setting with wonderful hosts. We especially enjoyed our Winemaker Dinner with the “rock star” Tim Turvey of Clearview Winery. Thanks to Larry's suggestion we lunched with Tim @ Clearview the following day. Our wine tour with Geoff of Convivium was excellent! Larry and Joan, thank you for all your suggestions, wonderful hosting, fabulous food and a beautiful place to call home for 2 days.
Walt & Brenda Day – Savannah, Georgia (04/11)

Thank you both so much for making our wedding night so special and memorable. Your warm hospitality and the outstanding breakfast were simply amazing. The Masters Lodge is a stunning spot & we're so pleased we've been able to experience it – thank you!
Mitch & Nicola Hyndman – Napier (04/11)

You may be the smallest luxury hotel, but you both also have the very largest capacity for hospitality, warmth, and extraordinary breakfasts. The magnificent views and wonderful appointments in every room reflect both of you. Thank you for sharing all this with us and we hope to make a return journey. Fondly,
Barbara & Frank Fleischer – Tampa, Florida (04/11)

It doesn't get better than this – beautiful location, stunning home, impeccable service, and warm people. Our short stay with you was most pleasurable and extra special, thanks to the both of you. Your knowledge and expertise in all things here in New Zealand is impressive – not to mention your wine experience!
JoAnne Holman & Marc Levin – Newport Beach, California (03/11)

Special thanks for the exquisite stay in The Masters Lodge. Splendid hospitality, superb dinners, fabulous wines, and interesting conversation. The details for each meal were perfect and the range of flavours and textures truly marvellous. The epitome of a New Zealand “Shangri La” and with the perfect musical accompaniment.
Chris & Diana Walsh – Brookline, Massachusetts (03/11)

“Memorable” is a much used cliché but in this case perfectly describes our stay here. You have both been such thoughtful, friendly hosts and your detailed knowledge of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau features of this wonderful lodge made for a really fascinating visit. Finally, of course, there are the breakfasts and cakes to die for!
Ann & Colin Hines – London, England (02/11)

I want to let you know that our visit to The Masters Lodge was truly a highlight of our trip. We have never felt more welcome than we did in your home. Both of you are great hosts. The attention to detail is unrivaled. Larry making dinner reservations at the Mission Estates Winery ahead of our arrival, knowing that all the restaurants would be booked due to the Art Deco Festival, was most thoughtful. Little things like that is what sets you apart from any place we have ever stayed before. The Winemaker's Dinner was better than we could even imagine. There is nothing about our stay with you that could be improved upon. We are huge fans and will make sure everyone we send to NZ knows that The Masters Lodge is a must.
Willie & Laura Owens – Elizabeth City, North Carolina (02/11)

How wonderful it has been to return to your elegant and warm home for a most memorable New Year's Weekend. Our second visit has been as delightful as our first four years ago. We shall think of you and wish you a truly happy and prosperous 2011 and beyond. See you again!
Nancy & Gary Murfin – Seattle, Washington  (01/11)

Our 4th time visiting your beautiful lodge. You have seen us since the beginning of our relationship and it is a truly special experience to be back. Everything is still beautiful and tranquil and, as always, the food, wine, music was fabulous, the scenery breathtaking and your hospitality amazing. We cherish your friendship. With love and thanks,
Ayumi & Norman Wilson – Fiji (01/11)

Our experience here was beyond our expectations. From your magnificent service, attention to detail, stunning views, lovely linens, sweet flowers, all made our stay memorable. Thank you for our wonderful stay.
Nunzio & Joanne Alioto – San Francisco, California (01/11)

What can we say? The grace, style and luxury of your home, the graciousness, kindness and attention to detail of your hospitality has made our stay memorable. Thank you,
Mike & Jennifer Tuson – Cyprus (01/11)

A thousand thanks for letting us share your wonderful home!! Your home is by far the best small hotel we have ever visited. Lots of love,
Stuart & Angela Bottomley – Burley-in-Wharfedale, England (01/11)

“Heaven on Earth” – that's what you have in Masters Lodge! Bess and I have enjoyed your warm hospitality so much. The town tour with “Bertie”...the wine tasting with Kate...the delicious breakfasts with the magnificent views...We hope that somehow, some way we can return.
Bess & Jim Long – Wilmington, North Carolina (01/11)

We have had such a wonderful stay in your beautiful home! Everything has been absolutely perfect. From the moment we arrived, your warm welcome and superb service has made us both feel so relaxed and spoiled! Wonderful food, fabulous views – we hope we can visit again!
Deanne & Jason Bloom – Devonport, Auckland (01/11)

An enormous thank you to you both for your wonderful hospitality during our stay at The Masters Lodge. The food, the rooms and the views – an experience we will not forget any time soon. The best way to see Napier! We can't wait to return.
Robyn, Nicholas, David & Annabelle Rodd – Caulfield, Australia (11/10)

From the moment we entered your beautiful garden, we knew The Masters Lodge was going to be a good experience...we just didn't know how special our entire stay would be! You have indulged all our senses with your exquisite attention to detail – from the relaxing background music, to the in-room massage, the incredible scents of the bathroom products, not to mention the view over Hawke's Bay and collection of artwork and beautiful fresh flowers...and our meals! Thank you both so much,
Jackie & Bud – Sydney, Australia (11/10)

Many thanks for allowing us to share your gorgeous home. It is a perfect delight, full of fascinating and beautiful works of art. Thanks also for your warm hospitality, help and advice. We are only sorry our stay was so short. Best wishes,
John & Nancy Glendinning – Glasgow, Scotland (10/10)

Who would have thought that the best “Cosmopolitan” outside New York would be found in Napier?! Thank you for a fantastic and memorable stay. You made us feel welcome from the moment we set foot in the door.
Hayley Abdullah & John Butts – Sydney, London, New York (04/10)

Thank you for an unforgettable stay. We like the Art Deco style, the furnishings, the gardens, the paintings and the wonderful dinners! We learned that New Zealand has some exciting wines – thanks to your expertise. We also liked the wonderful music. A great stay – thank you.
Petra & Harald Hohmann – Büdingen, Germany (04/10)

Fabulous views, exquisite house & joyous hospitality. Our three-day stay went far too quickly. The ambience was such that it felt like home, albeit with 5-star service. Many, many thanks and much love to you both.
Stephen & Hazel Barratt – Shropshire, England (03/10)

Dear Joan and Larry, Thank you for making our honeymoon unforgettable.  We have had a wonderful time here with you at The Masters Lodge. Everything has been perfect since we arrived, from the food to the service to the view. Thanks for being part of our memories. Sincerely,
Michelle & Russell Huebner – Austin, Texas (03/10)

The charm and appeal of the beautiful City of Napier is complemented, and in fact, exceeded by the style and elegance, comfort and epicurean delights offered us by Joan and Larry. Perfection can never be improved upon and that is what we have experienced here! With our wholehearted thanks,
Christel & John Colin – Norwich, Norfolk, England (03/10)

Dear Joan and Larry, This stay is the best we ever had.
Mia & Lennart Pihl – Helsingor, Denmark (02/10)

Dear Larry & Joan, We have been treated to a slice of heaven since the moment we arrived. Larry greeted us with a huge welcoming smile. Joan, your gentle manner and kind ways made us know we were going to experience a wonderful 3 days! We thoroughly enjoyed Napier. All your suggestions were “spot on”. Your hospitality has us planning our return trip.
Nancy & Tom Gallagher – Arlington, Virginia (02/10)

Dear Joan & Larry, What a fantastic place you have! We enjoyed the beautiful room, the splendid view over Napier and Hawke's Bay and, of course, your hospitality! Breakfasts were wonderful & our dinners were fabulous. We will never forget these. Thank you so much for everything. You can be sure we'll be back when we are in New Zealand again.
Annet & Hans Bot – Apeldoom, The Netherlands (02/10)

Dear Larry and Joan,  Staying here has been one of the highlights not only of this holiday, but of all holidays. We absolutely love your stunning home and were made to feel it was ours for our stay. It has been fantastic meeting you and we sincerely hope to be back in the not too distant future.
Debra & Gary Weekes – Kent, UK (01/10)

Dear Joan, dear Larry,  Many thanks for the perfect stay. Everything was wonderful: the room, the view, the food, the wine and, last but not least, your friendly and warm service. We will never forget our time here.
Silke & Andreas Seifert – Aachen, Germany (01/10)

Another perfect stay in New Zealand can mean only one thing...we are in Napier and at The Masters Lodge. Thank you for a very special and memorable New Year's Eve dinner and fireworks on the veranda. You have also raised the standards for picnic get-a-ways...the outdoor “starlight” movie at Black Barn will be a lasting memory. The Lodge is exquisite and your attention to detail is unsurpassed. You are both very gracious and special people. We wish you all the best for your continued success and happiness.
Stephanie & David Meadows – Jakarta, Indonesia (01/10)

We had the luxury to spend a fabulous New Year's and be the guests of Joan & Larry. The food was so delicious and very nicely presented. The Art Deco house is really a jewel with a splendid view over the Hawke's Bay. Larry let us discover special wines, including with Arneis grape from Piedmonte and a sweet red wine with pavlova. You can see that he is a great sommelier with a passion for wine. Thanks for your hospitality and a good start of the year. This will be carved in our memories.
Miecke Raemaekers & Philippe Reynaert – Belgium (01/10)

Carlos and I have been left speechless – your home is a paradise on earth.  You gave us two days of bliss – and even our golf scores improved.  What memories we will take back with us to Mexico. Our love,
Heather & Carlos Herrera -- Cuernavaca, Mexico (12/09)

Larry & Joan, In an increasingly homogenized world it's so wonderful to find a true gem that stands out in its brilliance. The short time we spent here has revitalised us and given us fresh hope for a life at a slower pace. We love art deco, and this home is nothing short of a dream. Yet the perfect hosts took it to a whole different level. The soul and passion that Joan and Larry have for Napier allowed us to achieve so much more than we had planned. There is little more to say than we feel we discovered a little slice of heaven in our time here. Thank you both,
Christopher Bane & Edward Downey – London, England (12/09)

Dear Larry, dear Joan!  Right when we came in, we were overwhelmed with the artistic setting and the amazing taste for art, nice furniture and beautiful things. Thank you for the warm and affectionate reception and the care. Thanks for the fantastic meals and the exquisite wines and the care for the smallest detail. The evening dining outside on the terrace will stay in our memories forever. We took many pictures to remember this extraordinary stay.  All the best for 2010 and the future,
Nora & Heinz Lehning – Tannay, Switzerland (12/09)

We chose The Masters Lodge as the place we were going to get married after coming across it on the internet. We were excited and looking forward to our stay, but we had no idea of the experience we were going to have.
The Lodge is gorgeous and the decor is amazing, but the heart of the Lodge is Joan and Larry. Their warmth, hospitality and attention to detail are incredible. Reservations were made for dinner just in case we wanted them, directions were waiting when you left; no detail was left unattended.
Our wedding was just the two of us and Joan and Larry made it romantic, intimate, warm and perfect. We had the Winemaker's Dinner that evening and it is one of the culinary and wine experiences of our lives. If you have the opportunity it is not to be missed. The day we had to leave Joan and Larry was sad and we are looking forward to going back to celebrate an anniversary. Thank you Joan and Larry for an incredible experience!
Kelly & Curt Ruther – Anaheim Hills, California (12/09)

We have had such a wonderful, fun-filled time on both islands! Thanks for making the expression: “saving the best for last” a fact! You captured every detail to the “Max”!  Our sincere compliments to your Chef.
Jan & Bill Coombe – Arcola, Illinois (09/09)

Dear Joan & Larry:  Thank you so much for a truly wonderful stay. The service was impeccable, the food and wine memorable, the house absolutely stunning and your company very special. You made us feel so welcome and relaxed on our wedding night.  We will dream about lying in bed listening to the sea breathe...Thank you so much,
Joanne & Geoff Thompson – Warwickshire, UK (04/09)

Larry & Joan,  To see this wonderful place and to stay in this luxurious home must be experienced to be believed. Your attention to detail along with your unparalleled service is outstanding. We recommend the Winemaker's Dinner to all future guests, an absolutely sensational night! We thank you for our fabulous 3 nights here.
Eric & Jan Read – Warrnambool, Australia (03/09)

Dear Joan & Larry,  Where does one begin! It's like walking into the set of a 1930's movie – the attention to detail is out of this world – from the flowers to the newspapers wrapped in pretty raffia and the truly memorable breakfasts. But, what really makes this place so special are both of you and your gentle hospitality and sense of humour. You are truly 5-Star and we both leave here very happy.  Love from
Olga & Andrew Satterly – England (03/09)

We've stayed here, we've stayed there --
We've stayed at inns most everywhere.
But none so interesting as this!
Perhaps, I think, they don't exist.
So to your future guests we say
Relax, enjoy this special stay.
For food and hospitality
none can compare, we both agree.

Becky & Tom Donegan – Washington, DC (03/09)

Dear Joan & Larry, We are regretting that we have to leave you. We have travelled a lot in many parts of the world but we have never experienced such high quality of service and accommodation. The décor of the house is eloquently telling us so. We would like to come back soon. Very best wishes,
Hiro & Sachi Saito – Tokyo (02/09)

Wow! What can one say! Impeccable taste, impeccable cuisine, impeccable wine and a stunning little Nirvana! You have allowed us to experience the rare gift of true relaxation. What a truly magical place and experience. Lying in bed listening to the Pacific Ocean doesn't get much better. Thank you
Lee & Raewyn Greshon – Auckland (02/09)

Dearest Joan & Larry, The Masters Lodge is the most welcoming, comfortable, luxurious accommodation we have stayed in anywhere in the world. How lucky are we that we found you. Thank you for spoiling us. We will be back.
Sally & Ian Cessford – Port Melbourne, Australia (02/09)

Words almost fail us in describing how fabulous we think this place is. Napier is charming, but The Masters Lodge is a complete joy. We have enjoyed staying here so much. Everything is faultless. Such taste, such style!
Sharon & Graham Roberts – Isle of Man, British Isles  (02/09)

Thank you for a truly stunning holiday experience! Indeed, your tireless efforts to make everything wonderful have been amazing & much appreciated. We love the musical ambience, the gardens and flowers, the food, the Art Deco --- which makes this the “Jewel in the Crown”. All the best for continuing success, health and happiness,
Fiona & John Webster – UK (02/09)

Dear Joan & Larry, Your hospitality along with the setting and your gracious and beautiful home made this the most “outstanding” place we have ever stayed. You have every detail just right. The Winemaker Dinner was “Fabulous”!! With best wishes & love,
Susan & Paul Schiff – New York City (02/09)

This was it! A little bit of heaven – Joan and Larry sharing their lovely home above the Pacific. Larry, you are the “host with the most” and Joan, your love of cooking was divine – a new cake each day – yum! Roger and I so enjoyed our stay with you. Fondly,
Jan & Roger DeBard – Ketchum, Idaho (01/09)

Dear Joan and Larry, We are at our home in Toronto now. We waited until now to write so that we could properly take the time to thank you for the “over the top” hospitality, comfort and ambiance that you provided for us at your ultimate Napier hideaway. This was an experience that we will treasure always thanks to you both.
The priceless art deco furnishings, your incredible artwork, appointments and personal touches were fascinating to behold in their beautifully decorated surroundings. The extraordinary attention to detail at every turn, and impeccably spotless accommodations were to die for. The intimate and ultimate wining and dining feast that you cooked up for us was a heavenly, gastronomic delight that has set the bar for us as our number one complete dining experience.
It was a pleasure to meet and get to know you both, and we wish to thank you again for your warm and friendly treatment. We hope to visit you again soon to continue where we left off. Best regards,
Paul & Phyllis Bordo – Toronto (01/09)

Dear Joan and Larry!  Thank you very much for your outstanding hospitality! Your house is such a beautiful place to stay – with this beautiful furniture in perfect art deco style! This for sure will be one of our highlights during our trip of New Zealand. We are looking forward to coming back.
Corinna & Rolf de Vries – Emden, Germany (01/09)

Hi Larry. Hi Joan.  Thanks again for looking after us over Christmas and New Year's. Please excuse the hastily constructed couplet/ poem below:

We're back and unpacked,
Relaxed and thinking of our next trip back,
Mary is having a sherry and is relatively happy,
Brett is in a new nappy,
He had some lamb racks that were fine,
Felicity and I are having a Rockburn Pinot Gris wine,
Though we are in Auckland and the routine is the same,
The reality is no matter how hard we fake it; it simply is not the same,
What a shame!
Anyway well wishes, we are all home safe,
I am sure you're looking forward to a night with just some of the local waifs.

Bye from “Team Brett” (Robert, Felicity, Mary & wee Brett) – Auckland & Sydney (01/09)

Hi Larry & Joanie.  I really do want to thank you both for making the last couple of nights in NZ so very memorable.   As you know we had been touring around and it was fun and interesting visiting all the different Lodges and boutique hotels I had tirelessly selected, but only one really stood out as the outstanding winner and you know, of course, it was you guys – we really wished we had at least another night at your wonderful place and to spend another evening in your fun company!  Big kisses to you both!
Tracy & Rob McVeigh – Hotel de Vigniamont, Pezenas, France (12/08)

Thank you for having us in your tranquil home in Napier. It allowed us to unwind and relax. We have applied our usual marking system, saved for restaurants, to our experience here: -- Here goes: -- Ambiance 10/10; Presentation 10/10; Content 10/10; Service 9/10…… (wee Scottish joke! – actually 11/10 & awesome!) Thanks for everything. Have a great Christmas & New Year.
Penny & Bob Brass – Isle of Arran, Scotland (12/08)

Dear Joan & Larry, Susanne and I are very lucky, we have stayed at many of the best hotels in the world. These are hotels with many accolades to their credit, and, strings of stars after their name. However, they have all failed to live up to expectations due to lack of attention to detail and complete lack of warmth of personality. Some of these places just can't get the details right, even worse is a great hotel in a great location, but without any atmosphere. We could not find any fault with The Masters Lodge, which is a first! More importantly, the warmth of your both has made our stay an experience we will never forget. Ok, I will say it; this is the best place we have ever stayed!!!
Susanne & Colin Booth – Oxfordshire, England (11/08)

Dear Joan & Larry, Thank you for helping us celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary.  We have wonderful memories of The Masters Lodge from October 1998 (when we were married here).  But now we have some more special memories to take with us.  Our stay has been perfect. You have made the Lodge even more special. The dinner was just amazing thanks to the Chef. We are all feeling incredibly chilled out and we'll be back!
Kate & Glen Cox – Auckland (10/08)

Dear Joan & Larry:  Words cannot adequately express our appreciation for your kindness & hospitality during our last three days as your guests; when that hospitality is found in one of the most special houses we have had the pleasure to have experienced. What we have enjoyed is something truly special. Thank you both for these exceptional days and thank you to the Chef for the sumptuous meals. With our best wishes,
Suzie & Richard Wood – Melbourne, Australia (10/08)

Dear Joan & Larry – We truly saved the best for last on our trip in New Zealand! Your gracious hospitality blends perfectly with your beautiful house. Your attention to detail has made this stay truly unique – the champagne and oysters will last in our memory.  Thank you for adding a beautiful thread to the tapestry of our 20 years of marriage.
Beth & John Huff – Nashville, Tennessee (10/08)

Dear Joan & Larry, What a wonderful treat it was to celebrate my 50th birthday with you in your stunning home and to have the Chef add such wonderful culinary flavors. Both Ned & I have enjoyed our stay in your home and appreciate your attention to detail and quality, breakfasts wonderfully decadent, your hospitality so warm and home so inviting. Your taste in art and the blending of styles is so tastefully executed, so with one eye you can appreciate the interior beauty and with the other the stunning exterior views.
Mina & Ned Smith – San Diego, California (09/08)

Thank you for making our first trip to New Zealand one of our most memorable adventures. We have travelled throughout the world for the last 20 years and decided this is the best place we've ever stayed – not only for the décor but because of your welcoming us into your home. We wish everyone could experience New Zealand hospitality at its best.
Lissa & Jim Kelley – Nashville, Tennessee (04/08)

The four of us thought after Huka Lodge, which was wonderful, that we would have to go downhill from there.  However, your place and hospitality still remained as high or higher! We will always remember your place as one of the highlights of our New Zealand trip! The Lodge is beautiful as well as the view from the Lodge. The meals were delicious! Thank you for all your hard work in creating this beautiful New Zealand fantasy!
Pam, Larry, Charles & Nadine -- Australia (03/08)

This was our second holiday at The Masters Lodge. The danger of returning to a place that you totally enjoyed the first time is that high expectations can lead to disappointment. This has not happened. If anything we enjoyed our second visit more than our first. Joan and Larry are still exceptional hosts, they have added to their magnificent art collection and most importantly now have the Chef working her magic in the kitchen.
Jane & Philip Ovenden – Tunbridge, Wells, Kent, England (03/08)

Larry & Joan:  The Good News: We can now say we have experienced the pinnacle of travelers' accommodations. Your passionate dedication to the details of decoration and care for this historic landmark and gracious hospitality create a warm and comfortable home away from home. The Bad News: We must now leave before becoming dependent on your attentions. Amazing place. Amazing grace!
Tom Elsaesser -- Camarillo, California (03/08)

Yesterday, I sat reading on the divan, trying to absorb a long list of wine definitions I found at the back of one of your magazines. We had come in on the tail end of a storm and the wind was gusting. Finally the sun broke through and as I looked out the window, a wide double rainbow arched up out of the steely ocean and Cape Kidnappers was washed in a golden glow. A perfect moment at The Masters Lodge! Another one this morning on the patio for breakfast enjoying your flowers & the roasted tomato omelette with hints of flavors that I wanted to ask you about but then said – why, just enjoy. And that's what I did – enjoyed everything. Thank you,
Nancy Elsaesser – Camarillo, California (03/08)

Dear Joan & Larry, From the internet we had already a very nice impression, but the real thing exceeded our expectations by far. The beautiful home made us feel comfortable at once, as if we had entered into a brief period of living in a very beautiful era. Very instrumental to this has been your hospitality, the many helpful suggestions and the great dinners. It truly has been the highlight of our honeymoon! Thank you so much for all of this,
Josef & Ulrike Reisdorff – Köln, Germany (03/08)

Dear Larry and Joan, We arrived home on Monday and have been trying to catch-up. Our whole trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We had great weather, wonderful people and the food can only be told by the amount of weight we are both trying to lose. We stayed in some wonderful places but both agree Masters is our favorite. We love the special touches and the bed and linens were the best! Thanks to both of you for making our Down Under Experience the Greatest.
Steve and Linda Harry – Cave Creek, Arizona (02/08)

Joan & Larry – An ideal site – halfway around the world and feeling like we're at home. The graciousness of the setting is only out done by our hosts. Your New Zealand hospitality is effusive. After being here for such a short time, we have developed a sense of inclusiveness in the community. With the sun coming up from the East, it reinfuses the adage “It's a joy to be alive.”
Richard & Leslie Weinstein – West Hartford, Connecticut (02/08)
Michael & Anne Chorches – Atlanta, Georgia

You have certainly created a unique jewel of a small hotel -- we have never found anything to match it!  The room was great and the food superb. And we particularly enjoyed your hospitality.  We hopefully will have another opportunity to stay with you.
Mike and Nancy Wehr – Washington, D.C. (01/08)

Thanks so much for making our past two nights in New Zealand & our Honeymoon so special! Your house is beautiful; the setting is idyllic; and, you are both the most kind, attentive and helpful hosts. A real highlight is the stunning food – well sourced, expertly matched with wines and a superb introduction to what New Zealand and, in particular, Hawke's Bay, has to offer!
Alex & Maria McLachlan – London (01/08)

Dear Joan and Larry, We just don't know where to start! We have had the most amazing time in your beautiful home. Your attention to detail is beyond belief – from our warm and friendly welcome, your charming hospitality, the fresh flowers on our napkins at the table, in our bathroom and bedroom – everything has been a magical experience…like a dream…a treasured memory.
Deborah & Roger Bowler – Much Hadham, Herts, England (01/08)

Dear Joan & Larry, Well!! We have stayed at some wonderful houses, lodges and country homes during the last 3 weeks in NZ. It couldn't have got any better…but it just did! From the moment we walked in, absolutely everything has been superb. Of course, the house is delightful and comfortable. The attention to detail in every respect is exquisite. But most of all, the hospitality provided by you, in anticipating every need and going beyond the call of duty (early morning balloon flying at 5am does not expect breakfast provision!) has been outstanding. Never have we said “Wow” or “Just look at that” so many times in one place. Thank you so much for an unforgettable experience!
Adrian & Karen Turner – Yorkshire, England (11/07)

Dear Joan & Larry, It's difficult to find words that describe how very special our stay here has been. It truly is the “jewel of the crown”. The dinners and wine were magnificent and made our 20th anniversary celebration memorable. Best wishes,
Ron Subourne & Debby Weiland – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11/07)

Dear Joan & Larry, Thank you for providing the “icing on the cake” to our honeymoon. We had a wonderful stay in your beautiful Art Deco house. Our dinner the first night was the best we've had on our trip, and we looked forward every morning to the delicious breakfasts. Your cocktails and wine pairing were exquisite as well. Katie loved the nightly surprises that awaited us in our room. Overall our stay was a great last leg on our trip and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Warm Wishes,
Matt & Katie Soldo – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10/07)

Dear Joan and Larry, Out of this world!  We are so spoiled. How will we ever get back to everyday life in LA? This has to be one of the most wonderful hotels in the world – an extraordinary and exquisite experience. Thank you lots and the very wonderful Chef Lisa too.
John & Margaret – Los Angeles (09/07)

Dear Joan & Larry, Wonderful Experience! Thank you for everything you did for us. We really enjoyed staying here.
Ikuo & Chiyo Morimoto – Tokyo (06/07)

Dear Larry & Joan, We had such a lovely time staying here. You've done such a beautiful restoration. We love your take on modern Art Deco…very stylish! Your winery recommendations were right on. We had a great time with Jenny Dobson the winemaker at Te Awa and with Tim Turvey the winemaker at Clearview. Pacifica was a great dinner recommendation. We really enjoyed walking the beach & exploring downtown Napier - what a cute town! And, great breakfasts & super comfy bed! Most of all we enjoyed talking with you and getting to know you. We will be back and will bring friends! Our best,
Jennifer & Neil Tremblay – San Francisco (05/07)

Dear Joan & Larry,  Never have so many ooohs, aaahs, and mmmhs been uttered by us in 48 hours … actually we've dropped words and taken up purring!  Thank you for the most lovely, unforgettable, spoiling time and we hope one day to meet up again.  Lots of love and thanks,
Pandora & Buck Starbuck – London (04/07)

Dear Joan & Larry,  Thank you so so so much for the perfect experience. The food, the wine, the room, the house, the weather and your hospitality have been flawless and divine. You've given us a memory that will last forever. The only problem is that you have now set the bar so high that it's going to be very difficult for us to ever go back to reality. You have redefined our expectations of quality. Having our tenth wedding anniversary here was really special. It was exactly what we were hoping for, but didn't really expect to find. We wish you continued great success with your establishment and hope to be back sooner rather than later, for many years to come. Cheers,
Philip & Hadley Fierlinger – Wellington (04/07)

We cannot thank you enough! It has been so much fun chatting with you.  You have been so informative and interesting and helpful!!! Our dinner tonight has been a highlight of our New Zealand experience…best meal and wine pairings we've had in our two weeks in NZ (and we've eaten in some wonderful spots!)…kudos to the Chef, and Larry and Joan. Can the hosts be better? Don't think so...you're artists. What a sweet place! For one who knows little of Art Deco, what an eye opener. Good luck and many happy NZ years to you. Thank you,
Trish & Chris Abell – Chevy Chase, Maryland (03/07)

Dear Joan & Larry: We entered The Masters Lodge as two frazzled yuppies – a solicitor and a reporter, both tethered to keyboards & bound by deadlines. This morning, 3 days on, we will leave recharged and revitalized! Refreshed by the sweet, fresh air, the native beauty of the region, and – a highlight – your outstanding hospitality! Your attention to detail astounds us – wild flowers tucked in napkins, a perfectly appointed Art Deco home, a master wine list to take home.  Really, we could go on & on! Thank you,
Kristie Lu Stout & Seung Chong – Hong Kong (02/07)

Dear Joan & Larry: What special people you are to make us feel so at home. The ambience, food & hospitality were second to none. We take away wonderful memories. You have thought of all the details, the little touches! ee cummings and ginger chocolates, sea breezes and our gorgeous outlook. Thoroughly enjoyed our relaxed, civilized teatimes and dinners. We felt transported to another unhurried period of time. Many, many thanks for your wonderful hospitality.
Frank & Helen Morneau – Toronto (02/07)

Dear Joan and Larry, After three weeks and five “lodges”, Jack and I decided that you deserve the “hospitality award”! We have felt so welcomed and at home here in your lovely “Art Deco” home on the “Bluff”. The Winemaker Dinner was incredible…such a delicious and creative dinner and fine wines! We will always remember your many kindnesses and refer friends to stay here at The Masters Lodge. The whole experience has been sheer perfection! With much gratitude and thanks,
Gail & Jack Thornton – Sun Valley, Idaho (02/07)

Dear Joan and Larry, How can we express in words how we have enjoyed our stay in your Lodge. Everything was so good, the Eric Clapton Concert, the food, and all the other things you did for us. Perhaps our English is not so good on this page, but we mean it from the bottom of our hearts -- Thank you!  All the best,
Henk & Connie van den Berg – The Netherlands (01/07)

Dear Joan & Larry, Why did we only book three nights here?! It was wonderful; your company, service, food…oh yes, & the views! Thank you both so much for sharing your beautiful home and view with us. Stay happy and healthy…big hugs to you both.
Angela Whitmore & Patrick Taylor – Greve in Chianti, Tuscany, Italy (01/07)

Dear Joan and Larry, Our first stop in New Zealand was at Huka Lodge, and we didn't think it could get better…but it really did.  From the moment we stepped into the house, Joan and Larry made us feel so at home. And what a beautiful home it is with such fantastic views. The food was delicious, with so many unusual details, a flower on the side of the plate and so on. We spent a very interesting gourmet wine tasting evening with the Winemaker and your other guests from America -- a really fun evening. A memorable stay — thank you so much.
Irene & Roger Platt – Cookham Dean, Berkshire (01/07)

Dear Joan & Larry, Excuse me for my poor English, but it's enough to say to you: Thank you very much for the 4 days we spent here with you! All was perfect. Before dying I would like to come back once more golfing at Cape Kidnappers and staying at Masters Lodge. It's my idea of Paradise!  Thank you again.
Pascale & Michel Quintard – Noumea, New Caladonia (09/06)

To Joan & Larry – Could never have imagined in the far reaches of New Zealand that we would have experienced such culinary feasts and such special attention. Thank you both so much for an “orgasmic” experience…one out of this world…and one we all will never forget. You are exemplary hosts – the finest. Best wishes and look forward to our return.
Jennifer & Peter Lechte; Marilyn & Andrew Cookes – Melbourne (05/06)

Dearest Larry and Joan – From the moment we drove up the winding road of this incredible bluff, we knew we were in for something special. How special though we couldn't have imagined. As we entered the ginger-scented entry our senses were overwhelmed by one beautiful stimulus after another. The colors, the woods, the leaded windows, art, and of course, the gorgeous furniture and furnishings are sheer perfection. Thoroughly transporting us to another time. We gained tremendous appreciation for this imaginative, innovative & lively period of “Art Deco”. Everything from this moment on was fabulous, from the first morsel of incredible food and delightful presentation to the last. We savored every moment. You are a delightful couple -- so accomplished and interesting. What a perfect home to welcome the weary and expectant traveller. You have far and away exceeded our every expectation and then some. A sheer delight! Thank you, thank you.
Kathryn & Ken Weeman – St. Helena, California (03/06)

After three weeks travelling, we have found “Eden” – wonderful accommodation, wonderful food, wonderful people. Thank you, Joan & Larry, for sharing your beautiful home with us.
Pat Einollahi & Rita Peacock – Cheshire, England (03/06)

Our previous experience of Art Deco was in the Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow, but Masters Lodge is the real thing – wonderful! One of the few places in the world where hyperbole is not necessary – I feel privileged to have shared the experience.
David & Felicity Ebsworth – England (03/06)

To Larry & Joan:
From across the Tasman we return To the land of the Silver Fern,
The weather was bleak and austere, But the greeting was warm and sincere,
In the city that rose from disaster, We stayed at the Lodge of the Master,
Larry and Joan preside over a great home, That rings with the echo of stunning Art Deco,
Thanks for the pleasure, We had in full measure.

We anticipate our return at a subsequent date.  All the best,

Thanks to Larry and Joan, hosts most kind,
This travelling foursome did indeed unwind
@ masterslodge, most uncommonly fine,
Where bay light and host wit equally shine.
The garden, martinis and breakfasts sublime
Make memories that conquer both space and time.

“An Art Deco delight.”
We went to the Masters Lodge for the art deco and the luxurious intimacy. We visit dozens of 5 star hotels every year and we expected the best. Joan and Larry greatly exceeded our expectations, making this the highlight of our New Zealand trip. If you have the chance to visit Napier, this is the place to stay.

“A highlight of our trip to New Zealand - a wonderful boutique lodge.”
The Masters Lodge is a delightful, small luxurious lodge close to the centre of Napier. It is beautifully furnished with wonderful pictures and every facility you could want as a traveller. The suite was comfortable, quiet with many individual quality touches.

The best aspect of this lodge however is the hospitality of the owners Larry and Joan. What great people and how well they know their business. Fantastic recommendations for dinner, an outstanding breakfast offering and some real treats for afternoon tea - Joan is a master baker. Don't stay anywhere else if you are going to Napier and if you can ask Larry to organise dinner at the lodge - one of the best meals we had in New Zealand. Enjoy too one of Larry's expansively and enthusiastic shaken cocktails.

“This Place Is Special”
Outstanding. In a league of its own! Joan and Larry Blume make you feel right at home in their lovely old home on Bluff Hill overlooking Napier and the South Pacific Ocean.
Our second stay there. Treated to wonderful food from skilled and friendly chefs and fabulous wine. The Art Deco motif, so fitting in Napier, is another plus. This is a ten star property with wonderful hosts. We were there for New Years and that made it all the more special.

Dear Joan and Larry:
I'm just in the middle of writing up the story on your lodge -- and I can't think of one thing I would suggest you do better.  Your level of involvement with guests is just right -- I enjoyed your company very much -- and I did appreciate the finishing touch of the perfect camellia and the chocolates at bedside.
The personalised touches like the dinner menu made an impression, and really the Lodge is pretty much faultlessly beautiful -- I admit I'm a real fan of leadlight and colour.  Karen Goa, Travel Journalist

Hospitality is all about people, atmosphere and details.  All were great and very enjoyable at The Masters Lodge.  When I will encounter Art Deco around the world, I will always remember this very refined place.  Thanks for an inspiring stay.

Reading through this handsome volume (yet further evidence of the exceptional taste and warmth that pervades your unique home), your appreciative guests would seem to have said it all!  However, we are delighted to add our own very special praise for your outstanding welcome and hospitality. We feel we have been involved in the whole history of the town in this wonderful Art Deco setting that you provide. More than that, the excellent food, interesting converse and superb setting all contribute to making this a "Best Experience"!

We are now home from our wonderful trip to New Zealand! The whole holiday was excellent. But one of the highlights was the wonderful time we spent with you. ‘Dinner with the Winemaker‘ was really special and a memory we shall always treasure. So thank you very, very much. Once again, many thanks for making our time with you so special. Love to you both,

Joan & Larry - you both are truly exceptional in every way.  The atmosphere you've created in your lovely home is perfect in every way & couldn't be more welcoming and relaxing.  We loved breakfast & dinner - great food, table settings & Larry's attentive service.  Wish we lived closer so we could see you more often.

We want you to know our stay at The Masters Lodge was the highlight of our entire New Zealand trip!  You truly are offering something special and your attention to detail was superb.  No doubt you will continue to impress your guests as you have found a winning combination of ambience, food, and hospitality!!!  We felt so very fortunate to have found you!

"This is one of the best hotels in New Zealand."
Situated on Napier Hill, looking out towards Cape Kidnappers and the Pacific Ocean.  The Masters Lodge is run by Joan and Larry Blume, New York professionals who on a visit decided to stay for good. They have taken over Baron Husheer's house, with elegant stained glass windows, and moved their collection of art nouveau and deco furniture to complement the house.
The service and hospitality are as good as it gets. They are more than happy to make any arrangements to the requirements of their guests, including visits to wineries and meeting one of Hawkes Bay's top winemakers. It isn't cheap by New Zealand standards, but worth every penny if you want the best.

Our experience at Masters Lodge in Napier was beyond heavenly. The quarters were exquisite, with incredible attention to detail. The suite including the bathroom (as well as the entire house) was furnished with museum quality art deco furniture and art and had every possible amenity you could desire. The view of the town, the mountains and the sea from the site on the hill was lovely. As important was the hospitality of our hosts Larry and Joan Blume. Here again, their efforts and attention to detail also went far beyond what anyone could expect. We elected to have dinner at The Masters Lodge and the food, like the breakfasts, was not only uniquely delicious, but it was exquisitely presented. We hated to leave.

"How can one improve on a 15 out of 10 score!!! "
Thank you both for an all too brief stay at The Masters Lodge and for your wonderful hospitality. We would just like to further endorse our comments that you present the property beautifully - the facilities are absolutely faultless. Breakfast is obviously the highlight of the guests' stay and you serve it in a very elegant, leisurely way. Thank you again for making our Napier stay so welcoming.

"As for The Masters Lodge- it is wonderful."
The building has been lovingly and meticulously restored and the art deco material is complemented by the owners' tasteful art collection. The rooms are large and very comfortable. The meals are wonderful- we ate there in the evenings as well as at breakfast. All the meals and wines were of an excellent standard. There is also guest access to the well-equipped local gym.
Larry and Joan are wonderful hosts. They made excellent suggestions and looked after our reservations for golf and gannets. They also plied us with drinks, cakes and nibbles just when we wanted them. We'd find it difficult to believe there is better lodging in the area.

My husband and I toured both the North and South islands of New Zealand on our honeymoon in May. We stayed at many nice places. But our favorite stay was at The Masters Lodge.  Joan is possibly the warmest host I've ever encountered.
We instantly felt at ease when we were greeted with beer, wine, and delicious snacks. Breakfast the next morning was amazing.  Joan introduced us to local New Zealand fruits, the best yoghurt I've ever had, eggs, toast, coffee, cheese...... It was awesome!  Oh, they also have a really cool guest book.

We had a great time when we stayed with you - easily the best stay of all our hotels and lodges while in New Zealand.  We'll certainly be recommending you to any of our friends who might be coming to Napier!  The welcome was warm, the rooms were luxurious and beautifully appointed, the Lodge was wonderful, the location and view unbelievable, and your help in bookings and making us feel "at home" was absolutely great.

The Masters Lodge is an amazing place run by two wonderful people, Larry and Joan. A pair of former Manhattan-ites who have put together a truly special getaway. Everything about it is absolutely exquisite. Impeccable. Flawless. But it is by no means pretentious or stuffy.

The house and the rooms are beautifully curated with period furniture and art. It's not gaudy or overdone, it's just right. There's an incredible attention to detail. They have museum quality pieces everywhere you look, but it still manages to retain a cozy, very livable and intimate atmosphere.

They served us dinner outside on their beautiful veranda. It was easily one of the very best meals we've ever eaten, perhaps the all-time best, served with superb wines from their private collection - hand picked to match each course.

Everything was super fresh and done to perfection. The flavours were lively, but well balanced. The chef was a woman who is apparently quite renowned in the region.

“Heaven in Napier”
We arrived to find this magnificently restored 1800's B&B with a view that could have only been arranged in the stars. The interiors were beautifully done in authentic Art Deco style. All that was great, but what made me take the time to write this review were the hosts and our being spoiled for 2 days.
There's always beautiful accommodations and views, but Joan and Larry go out of there way to make you feel at home. There is nothing they won't attempt to do for you to make your stay more comfortable and stress free. We decided not to drive to Auckland and Larry got right on the phone and arranged our air. They gave us great recommendations both locally and at future destinations in our trip.
The breakfasts they prepared for us were really terrific but you have got to do the "dinner at the lodge." They brought in a private chef for us that prepared the most incredible meal. We have dined around the world and this was a memorable meal in a gorgeous private dining room. Can not say any more than if you are in this area it's the only place to stay!
