Napier, in the North Island’s southeast, features stunning art deco architecture from the 1930s and a buzzing café culture – more than 30 cafés do business here. Marine Parade, a lush walkway along the sea bedecked with gardens and fountains, has a fabulous aquarium that families shouldn’t miss. Nearby await a gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers and plenty of Hawke’s Bay wineries in the heart of New Zealand’s oldest wine-growing region. Overlooking the Coast, The Masters Lodge was built by a local cigarette baron. There are only two rooms, both of them huge and nicely furnished, and one with a sun porch. For any service in your room, you just pull the old-fashioned bell cord. THE 10 BEST OF EVERYTHING: AN ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR TRAVELERS By Nathaniel & Andrew Lande A National Geographic Publication
"Napier is another place to enjoy sea breezes whipping through your hair and bright sun on your face, but its distinct sea-side-town atmosphere and earthquake history set it apart from the other towns along the east coast. Sauntering along stately, Norfolk pine-lined Marine Parade, you will find it hard to believe that this elegant city was completely rebuilt after total destruction in the Hawke’s Bay earthquake of 1931." Moon Travel New Zealand Handbook, 5th Edition
The Legend of Maui Maori legend tells us that the North Island of New Zealand is actually the world's largest fish. Maui-tikitiki-a-Taranga, a famous mythical hero, was fishing with his brothers and decided to show them his supernatural powers. He chanted a prayer, then reached into the ocean and brought up a magical jawbone. With it, he fished up the North Island or as the Maori named it, Te-Ika-a-Maui, the Fish of Maui.
The sacred jawbone used as the hook left its impression on the land where Hawke’s Bay was formed. If you look at a map of the North Island, you can see that Wellington is the head of Maui's fish, Cape Taranaki & East Cape are the fins, and Northland is the tail of the fish.
