Art Deco Napier
But, how did it come to be so?
An Earthquake of magnitude Richter 7.9 struck Napier at 10:47 am on Tuesday, February 3rd, 1931. The quake destroyed most of the buildings in the city. Those buildings that were not destroyed by the earthquake, were swept by the fires that broke out soon after.
Napier architects banded together with young graduates from the School of Architecture in Auckland to design a new city – one to reflect a break with the past, as well as providing the safety and economy that was important in the post-earthquake years.
The plan was to build a new city in the Art Deco style in just two years; it was without precedent! They created “The Newest City On The Globe”. They created a place of architectural wonder for generations of people to enjoy.
