Gardens & Parks
Trelinnoe Park – A Garden of Landscape In 1956 brothers Brian and John Wills took up residence on 2800 acres of waste scrubland that had not been successfully farmed. Their ambition was to create a profitable and pleasing farming enterprise. The result is a successful farming operation and the lovely Trelinnoe Park. John and Brian called their piece of land Trelinnoe (pronounced Tree-lin-o) in memory of a farm in Cornwall where their Grandfather was born and grew up before immigrating to New Zealand. The Park’s 30 acres has an exceptionally wide and varied collection of trees, shrubs, perennials and natives, landscaped woodland paths, wide sweeps of lawns, clipped hedges, hillsides of flowering trees and spectacular vistas. Located on the Napier to Taupo Road, 45 minutes from Napier (46km). Old Coach Road on right. Open year round. Magnolia Café is also open daily from 10am to 5pm. Hosts: John & Fiona Wills. Phone 06 834 9703.
Trädgård – An Award-Winning Country Garden Trädgård means “Tree Garden” in Swedish. Development of this sixteen-acre property began in 1992. There are specimen trees, roses (mainly English), perennials and shrubs in a seven-acre informal park-like garden, and a five-acre special-purpose timber block. A variety of ducks inhabit the ponds and older varieties of chooks and pigeons complete the bird life. Also of note, Dorothy has been a quilter since 1975 and their home showcases over 50 quilts. Open October to April. Advance reservation required. Hosts: Dorothy & Robin Bell Address: 158 Shanley Road, R.D.9, Hastings, New Zealand Phone: 646 874 3708.
Bluff Hill Domain Bluff hill was first sighted and named by Captain Cook on October 15, 1769. Originally a signal and lighthouse reserve during World War II, the concrete gun emplacements now act as a wonderful vantage point to capture the spectacular views from the Manawatu Gorge to the hills beyond Wairoa, and across the bay from Mahia Peninsula to Cape Kidnappers. Lighthouse Rd, Bluff Hill. Open during daylight hours.
Centennial Gardens The Centennial Gardens are located at the base of Bluff Hill on Marine Parade. The small garden was developed in 1974 to commemorate the centenary of the establishment of Napier. It features a beautiful waterfall and native and exotic trees.
The Botanical Gardens Located in the middle of Napier Hill, the gardens form a charming oasis of well-kept lawns bordered by flowerbeds, groves of trees, a spacious aviary and a stream with ornamental bridges. Spencer Rd, Napier. Open Daily 9am – 5pm
The Sunken Gardens Set against an ocean background on the waterfront, this garden, with its year-round floral colour and rustic water wheel, provides a pleasant addition to the wonderful walk along Marine Parade. Open daily.
